The Welsh Dragon has been slain!
Probably the most iconic UK sportive The Dragon Ride, or L’etape Wales, took place on June 11th. Eight members of BRC attended to try and follow in such lauded club footsteps as Chris Gore, Joe Webb, Siobhan Carroll and of course the one and only Paul Skelly.
The goal was to complete the legendary Devil route. A mere 305kms (190 miles) with some 4500m (14,750 ft) of climbing across some stunningly beautiful Welsh scenery.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the weather was a typical Welsh Summers day, with sun, rain and 70km/h winds in some places! The result of this was that only two names took their place amongst the legends. Stand up Neil Stevenson and Antony Denyer who completed the epic ride in a moving time of just 13:49:29.
Andrew Roberts, Oliver Wade, Justin York, Steve Dyer & Andrew Spencer all completed the equally challenging Gran Fondo (230 kms/142 miles and 3500m/11,500ft) with Jai Bear Patel sadly DNFing after encountering an out of character mechanical failure!
A huge shout out to Steve Davies who provided us with transport to and from and supported us on the entire route with food, water and encouragement.
Due to the nature of the ride and high degree of knackered-ness at the end we don’t have any group shots, although some of us did make it on TV!
